Mike Joyce Dealer Principal RMarine Sydney

Mike Joyce

Mike Joyce, Dealer Principal of R Marine Sydney has over 30 years marine industry experience and is the longest serving Riviera broker. R Marine Sydney predominately sells and services Riviera and Belize motor yachts. The brokerage component is the largest in Australia and specialises in large motor yachts, selling premiere luxury brands such as Sunseeker, Fairline, Azimut, Maritimo and Princess.

Mike and his team have won Australian Riviera Dealer of the Year Awards 5 times consecutively since 2009 together with Best Customer Service awards. Mike has sold countless luxury boats during his career and is the respected ‘go to’ person in the Australian marine industry.

With a deep understanding and love of boats, Mike knows that earning long-term respect begins with complete commitment to exceptional customer service.

Mike’s strong negotiation and leadership skills, coupled with his practical approach to problem solving, enable him to communicate to a variety of boat buyers and to work effectively with a variety of people. His local and global experience in selling boats both domestically and to international customers gives him a rare dual perspective that likens him to a doctor diagnosing the right boat for the right buyer. He has organised the purchases of luxury boats from his fleet to Europe and Asia Pacific regions.

R Marine Sydney has the advantages of a small workplace with much camaraderie and passion. Mike encourages monthly team days on Sydney Harbour and every employee has given him the mentor mantle. While money should be a motivator in selling boats, he talks about enjoying the journey when pursuing the end-goal of matching up the perfect boat to the individual.

Mike is always happy to share his knowledge with his customers and employees. He continues to spend half his time in boat sales which he still to this day enjoys the most, getting up at 5 am to start his day.

Selling or buying a boat is intrinsically about the relationships between the broker, buyer, engineers and shipwrights. All need to work well together to get the buyer the best boat for their situation. Designs, boat models and technologies change faster every year and to be a good broker one needs to stay ahead of the game.

‘A customer will often not know what boat is right for them. If they have the wrong boat it can lead to dangerous situations and I really want to make sure people are boating safely.’

‘If someone is new to boating I suggest that my customer starts off with a second hand or smaller boat. This way they can learn to handle the boat, then in 6 month’s move into a new and/or larger boat once they are comfortable. If a customer has a young family he or she requires a boat that is safe for children and not an entertainers boat.’

Mike Joyce’s family, natives of the Sydney Northern beaches move to Pittwater where at age 8 his love for all water activities begins.

Aged 11, Mike started working at the Royal Marine Yacht Club, Newport serving fuel and driving the club tender ferrying club members and guests to moored boats.

Mike spent 4 years in the banking industry starting off with a cadetship in international operations then moving quickly into trading currencies.

A penchant for being a little bit different and wanting to be around what he loved the most, Mike left merchant banking and went back to working as a motor-yacht boat broker for Bill Rowell Marine. The motor-yacht business operated by Andrew Moore sold a diverse fleet of luxury boats and this is where he developed a curiosity for boat customisation and developed his flare for boat sales.

In 1991, Lee Dillon Marine was established by Lee Dillon in Rushcutters Bay (LDM Riviera Sydney)

Mike’s entrepreneurial experience included partnering with Lee Dillon to begin 7 Seas at the Spit, a brokerage specialising in selling Riviera motor-yachts.

7Seas go on to sell not only Riviera and are the first dealership to import and sell Four Winns and Hydrasport (Genmar USA products).

After considerable success Lee Dillon sells his share of 7Seas to R Marine (Riviera).

Mike and Riviera maintain the dealership.

7 Seas becomes primarily a Princess Dealer, delivering motor-yachts, cruisers, Sport Cruisers and bowriders to customers all over Australia (Riviera, Princess, Four Winns and Hydrasport)

Mike takes over the management of LDM Riviera Sydney in Rushcutters Bay and operates both dealerships. Later that year, strategically the two businesses are consolidated and the whole operation is moved to Rushcutters bay.

Mike takes over R Marine Sydney to solely operate one of Australia’s largest brokerages and Sydney dealerships, with sales of over 300 luxury boats in the last 5 years.
