Tony Cantell , Riviera Sydney Riviera Boats

We’re pleased to introduce Tony Cantell, the newest addition to the R Marine Sydney service team.

With a strong background in timber boatbuilding and motor yacht maintenance, Tony brings a wealth of hands-on experience and a genuine passion for the marine industry.

From his early days as an apprentice in Pittwater to running his own business on the Gold Coast and working with some of Sydney’s well-regarded marine operations, Tony has built a diverse and well-rounded career as a shipwright.

We sat down with Tony to learn more about his journey, his approach to the craft, and what he’s looking forward to in his new role.

What inspired you to become a shipwright?
A natural affinity for woodworking, combined with a life spent on the water, led me toward a career as a shipwright.

Can you tell us about your journey in the marine industry?
I began my apprenticeship at Beashel Marina in Pittwater, where I developed a strong foundation in the trade. I then relocated to the Gold Coast and operated my own business for four years, gaining valuable hands-on and commercial experience. Returning to Sydney, I worked with Buizan Yachts for three years, followed by five years with Palm Motor Yachts. I then spent several years working independently with a range of boat dealers, before most recently joining the team at Bayview Slipway Shipwrights.

What types of vessels have you worked on?
Over the years, I’ve worked across a diverse range of vessels, with a particular focus on timber cruisers and motor yachts.

Is there a project you’re most proud of?
The refit of a 1964 Halvorsen stands out as a particularly rewarding project and one I’m especially proud of.

What skills do you bring to the team?
I bring a broad and practical skill set shaped by a variety of roles across the industry, along with a commitment to continually developing my knowledge as boat design and technology evolve.

What do you enjoy most about being a shipwright?
The greatest satisfaction comes from seeing a project through to completion and delivering a finished result to a high standard.

What’s something people might not realise about the work?
Every project is highly customised and detail-driven—it’s quite different from residential construction in that no two jobs are ever the same.

Do you have a preferred type of job?
I particularly enjoy working on teak decks.

What attracted you to the role?
The location, the calibre of vessels, and the opportunity to further develop my knowledge of Riviera were key factors.

How has your experience been so far?
It has been very positive. The team is welcoming, professional, and easy to work with.

What do you enjoy most about working here?
The team dynamic and the overall working environment.

What are your goals in this role?
To consistently deliver high-quality workmanship and contribute positively to the team.

What projects interest you in the future?
I’m particularly interested in advancements in production and the continued evolution of boat design.

What do you do outside of work?
I enjoy road trips and camping, particularly exploring the northwest countryside.

        Favourite boating spots around Sydney?
        Pittwater and the Hawkesbury River.

        Favourite Riviera model?
The Riviera 6000 Sport Yacht, my future boat.
